Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship

Nurture teaching talent in your school and trust

Our Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is a 12-month training programme that allows recruits to gain QTS and a teaching apprenticeship qualification, whilst remaining in paid employment in school.

Apprentices can specialise in primary or a specific subject at secondary level. Our blended learning approach combines in-school experience, regional training and remote learning across Yorkshire and the Humber and the North East.

The recommended submission date for PGTA applications is by May 2025.

Apprentices can start on a higher teaching timetable than other ITT trainees (up to 60% of their in-school time, rising to 80% for the last 6 weeks of the training year).

Hands-on training allows apprentices to develop practical skills that are directly applicable in school. Apprentices are not supernumerary, meaning they can teach their own classes from day one.

Employing an Apprentice

Internal Recruitment: In some schools and organisations, an existing member of staff has been identified for further training and development, which can be delivered through an apprenticeship. The school or employer can contact Exchange Apprenticeships, and we can jointly complete the selection and initial assessment.

External Recruitment: If the school or college has a post that can be filled by an apprentice during training but does not have a suitable current employee, Exchange Apprenticeships can advertise and complete the initial selection process, then present a shortlist to the school or employer for interview. Following a successful interview, the initial assessment is conducted by Exchange Apprenticeships and the employer, as in the first scenario.

The initial assessment identifies current strengths and areas for development and takes into account prior experience. From this assessment, a training plan is produced detailing when the training will be delivered, where, and by whom.
